With deepest sympathy MBU18 AAA says farewell to a long time league supporter, Ken Coleman.

KENNETH WAYNE (STATS) COLEMAN

I Kenneth Wayne (Stats) Coleman passed away peacefully at my residence of Victoria Landing in the comfort of family and friends on October 27, 2026, at the age of 78 after a two-year battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig Disease). Ken was born May 3, 1948, in Virden, MB to Albert and Doris (Price) Coleman. Ken spent his early years in the RM of Archie before the family moved to Virden when he was in Grade 4. He attended Mary Montgomery School, Goulter School and Virden Collegiate Institute before attending Brandon University, graduating in 1975.
Ken began his in the newspaper industry in the sports department at the Brandon Sun in September 1977. Two years later, he moved to New Westminster, BC where he spent three years with the Columbian Newspaper. That was followed by three years teaching at Birtle Collegiate from 1982-83. After a short stint back at the Brandon Sun, Ken spent three years working for the Brandon Wheat Kings before finally returning to the Brandon Sun news department where he finished out his career, retiring in May 2006.
Ken’s greatest passion in life was sports. Besides being an avid golfer, Ken was an equally avid volunteer, spending countless hours at hockey rinks, baseball parks and golf courses for both international, national, provincial and local events. The Brandon University Bobcat Hockey program and the Manitoba U 18 (Midget) Hockey League – particular the Brandon Wheat Kings – held a special place in my heart. It was through these many activities I earned the nickname Stats and made most of my lifelong friends.
Another of Ken’s pastimes was genealogy, which included extensive travel and countless hours scouring the Internet to trace every branch of family. At the same time, I did research or assisted many family and friends develop their family trees. Ken was pre-deceased by Mother Doris (1958) and Father Albert (1998). Ken is survived by brother Ron (Linda) Coleman, niece Rhonda Stark, nephew Darcy (Kim) Coleman, great niece Janelle (Nathan) Dufour and great nephew Brady (Delanie) Stark, along with many extended family members and wonderful friends.
Thank you to the staff at Prairie Mountain Health, the staff and residents of Victoria Landing the team at ALS and especially to Ken’s family and friends for their love and support during time of need. Also, a very special thank you to my cousin Doreen Angus, a very special lady, who catered to Ken’s every need since diagnosis of ALS.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Knox United Church, 18th and Victoria, Brandon on Wednesday, November 11, beginning at I:00 p.m. In lieu flowers, donations in memory of Ken may be made to Brandon Christmas Cheer, the ALS Society of Manitoba or a charity of your choosing.
